stemming from a rather unfortunate issue of mine, after a bland sunday, i've been thinking about life and social relationships. leave it to me to overthink any subject whatsoever but i'm wondering about different cultures and coutries. after having lived in 3 different continents in my adulthood i find i keep comparing one to the other and all their pros and cons. i was in the united states for 5 years, in greece for 4 and now, in brazil for 4.5. of course, wherever you are, if you adapt well, and i'm lucky to say that i was able to, you'll be fine no matter where you are. home really is where the heart is.
but i've always guided my life based on my social relations. friends were always the most important thing to me. after having lived that motto for oh, 32 years, i am having a bit of a difficulty with brazilian culture's "i'll call you". i'm not angry per se, i'm just trying to figure it out. they always say "i'll call you" or "let's go out for coffee sometime" and it's an empty promise like i've never seen one. i'm not sure if it's just fake or it's part of the culture. i personally like hanging out with people, calling, doing nothing together, getting their opinions at an art show, going to the movies, eating at new restaurants. is this an exception? am i that different from the culture here just because i mean the things i say?
well, so it's sunday night, back to reality here, enough rambling, and i'm trying to understand the culture, at a very superficial level. why hasn't the phone rung all day? am i that annoying? am i bad company? and then, reality check, don't take it personally little missy, life does not revolve around you/me, thank god. which leads me to think: what are people doing all day? does tv still play an important role here? do people just sit and watch tv for a full day? given the importance of the last chapter of the soap opera last friday, yea, maybe. i heard of a party where the birthday girl herself stopped the party to watch the last minutes of the soap opera. wow. do we all facebook our lives way too much that we forget to see people in the flesh? (explicit use of expression there, hee hee) do people feel complete and social when the friend list has hit number 642? hm. if this is where it's headed, then yea, i don't fit in. and yea, i am a bit concerned.
it's making me reexamine if life is not about friends and social relations, what is it about?
so if you don't mind me asking,
what did you do this weekend?
and in a nutshell, if it can ever be answered that way, if you could pick one thing/theme, what is life about for you?
