feeling very nostalgic for some reason. i definitely feel that college was the best time of my life, and i'm sure a few, if not a lot of, people would agree. i also feel that lately i've been more into doing than into thinking. of course, a good thing in my book, but it makes posting here a bit more careless. that's why the posts haven't been great or breaking new grounds. went to two galleries yesterday (nara roesler and triangulo) and i'm very glad with what i saw. now that i think about it, no wonder i'm nostalgic. i'm a big fan of cao guimarães (currently at nara roesler) and he always uses things that are very common and for some reason, i very much relate to his work. other than beautiful poetic photographs about street signs that were forgotten, therefore dirty or rusty, he had this video. it was beautiful graphically because you could see the landscape in front of you but behind you as well, through a rearview mirror. he videoed (word?) for 5 mins, from the height of a truck/van/big car, a ride through a greek island. he always looks a bit further up than the horizon. it's a very conscious perspective choice and i really like it. so you could see the tops of houses and big blue skies, but just that was enough to recognize greece.
very beautiful.
and then, upstairs, paulo whitaker is showing. he's a painter and somehow, i feel, has very complex paintings. they're somehow organic but rough around the edges. very painterly but original at the same time. and predictable because he uses similar forms repetitively but every painting is a different painting. (picture here on this post is of paulo's work)
so hard to explain art into words.
last gallery, i saw sérgio romagnolo, that i'm already a fan and the more i know him personally, the more i like his work. (funny how that always works: the better you know the artist and the more you like him/her, the more you relate to his/her work) and mariana palma with her beautiful strange watercolors that seem to be a very good potential work in progress, as an artist.
